A major trade mission to India is showcasing the North of England's strengths in advanced manufacturing, technology and innovation, with the potential to unlock new international investment and business opportunities.

Nearly 200 representatives from across the North of England are taking part in the mission, which aims to capitalise on opportunities created by the new UK–India Free Trade Agreement.

UK Government analysis estimates that the agreement could boost Northern economies by £450 million annually in the long term, including £70 million for the North East.

The delegation, organised through The Great North initiative in partnership with HSBC and the UK Government, brings together businesses, universities, investors and regional organisations to strengthen commercial relationships and open new international markets.

Showcasing Northern innovation and technology

The trade mission includes a programme of business meetings, investment pitches and sector-specific discussions in Delhi, alongside targeted activity in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other locations.

A key focus is promoting the North's capabilities in advanced manufacturing, life sciences, clean energy, digital technology and innovation, connecting regional businesses with potential customers, investors and research partners in India.

These sectors closely align with the strengths of the North East Technology Park (NETPark), where more than 40 science and technology businesses are developing technologies for applications including space, defence, advanced electronics, advanced manufacturing and life sciences.

With companies at NETPark increasingly operating in international markets, opportunities to build global partnerships, attract investment and access new customers are important to supporting their continued growth.

The mission also aims to strengthen relationships between Northern universities and Indian research institutions, creating opportunities for collaboration, technology development and knowledge exchange.

Building international partnerships

Among the North East businesses taking part is County Durham-based Low Carbon Materials, which is exploring opportunities to introduce its sustainable construction technologies to the Indian market and develop new supply chain partnerships.

The company's participation demonstrates how innovative businesses from the region can use international trade opportunities to commercialise new technologies and reach growing global markets.

The visit is designed to establish long-term commercial and research relationships, helping businesses secure new contracts, attract investment and develop international partnerships.

Supporting growth across the North East

The trade mission comes as the North East continues to develop its strengths in science, technology and advanced manufacturing.

At NETPark, businesses benefit from specialist research and development facilities, access to expertise from Durham University and national innovation centres, and opportunities to collaborate with other technology companies.

The recent £100 million expansion of NETPark has also created additional space for companies looking to scale their operations, supporting the development and commercialisation of new technologies.

As international opportunities grow, initiatives such as The Great North trade mission have the potential to help businesses across the region build new relationships, access investment and expand into global markets.
