This cutting-edge site enables academic partners, SMEs and multi-nationals to accelerate the commercialisation of medical technology products.

PARTNERSHIP WORKING

Access to specialist laboratories for testing and development work

CPI’s National Healthcare Photonics Centre is a state-of-the-art facility based at NETPark in County Durham. This cutting-edge site enables academic partners, SMEs and multi-nationals to accelerate the commercialisation of medical technology products. The £8m facility is supported by the Government’s Local Growth Deal, through the North East Local Enterprise Partnership. The facility is helping to encourage innovation and expertise to flourish in the UK medtech industry.

Healthcare photonics is the use of light-based technologies to diagnose and treat medical conditions. The field offers an innovative approach to address the growing global demand for non-invasive, cost-effective, and personalised treatments. Current applications include non-contact cancer diagnostics, endoscopic imaging and a variety of laser treatments. CPI provides the expertise and facilities to help companies bring innovative technologies to market sooner, with less risk and lower costs, ultimately benefiting the patients that need them.

A space for the development and commercialisation of innovative ideas

The aim of the facility is to provide a space for the development and commercialisation of innovative ideas using light-based methods for diagnosing and treating disease, as well as imaging systems.

The site provides access to specialist laboratories for optics, life sciences, electronics, ionisation radiation testing and development work. The pilot manufacturing space will support companies of all sizes to scale-up and manufacture products for the medical technologies market. CPI works with these businesses throughout the process to support them as they develop innovative new products.
