Why the North East is the Natural Home for the Next Generation of Biotech
Business Durham's Buisness Growth Director, Kerry Walker

Next week, I’ll be heading over to Newcastle for a particularly important conversation: how we build and scale the North East’s biotech cluster to compete not just nationally, but globally at the Northern Life Science Gathering.

The event is being hosted by the team at HFR, and I want to start by highlighting the incredible work they do. As a long-standing part of our community at the North East Technology Park (NETPark), they are a brilliant example of the technical excellence and ‘can-do’ spirit that defines our region’s life sciences sector.

A Priority for the North East

It’s an exciting time for our area. The North East Combined Authority Local Growth Plan has rightly identified Life Sciences as a priority sector. Here in Durham, we’ve long known that the ingredients for success are already in the soil. As the ‘Golden Triangle’ of London, Oxford, and Cambridge becomes increasingly crowded and expensive, many are looking north. They’re finding that Durham isn't just a cost-effective alternative; it’s a world-class destination in its own right.

The Power of the ‘Triple Helix’

What makes us different? It’s our ‘Triple Helix’ approach. It’s the way our businesses, brilliant academic minds at Durham University, and support services like the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI), don’t just coexist but actively work together. This isn't a theoretical partnership; it’s a practical ecosystem that takes a concept from a university lab and turns it into a commercial reality.

Practical Support for Scaling Up

We know that for a biotech or med-tech firm to grow, they need more than just an office; they need specialised, high-spec infrastructure:

  • Infrastructure that Grows with You: From the flexible R&D spaces and cleanrooms at NETPark, to the Orbit incubator for university spinouts, we provide the physical room to breathe and expand.

  • Cutting-Edge Innovation: With CPI’s RNA Centre of Excellence on our doorstep, our tenants have access to the kind of infrastructure that is usually reserved for global giants.

A Community of Experts

When you join us, you aren't just renting space; you’re joining a neighbourhood of pioneers. Whether it’s the National Healthcare Photonics Centre or neighbours like Magnitude Bioscience, Northumbria Pharma, and PolyPhotonix, you are surrounded by people who speak your language.

Behind all of this is a fantastic talent pipeline. Between our local colleges and the steady stream of STEM graduates and PhD researchers from Durham University, the skills are here to power your next decade of growth.

Building the Future Together

The North East has always been a place where we make things that change the world. Our biotech cluster is the next chapter in that story. We have the space, the science, and the spirit; now we need to keep building the momentum.

Let’s start a conversation.
