University spin-out company receives prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise

We’re proud to celebrate Geoptic, a pioneering company based at NETPark, which has been honoured with a King’s Award for Enterprise in the Innovation category.

Geoptic is a Durham University spin-out, founded in collaboration with the University of Sheffield and St Mary’s University, Twickenham. The company is transforming how we assess the safety of railway tunnels using cosmic ray muon imaging — a cutting-edge, non-invasive technology that scans deep underground structures with remarkable precision.

This award recognises Geoptic’s groundbreaking work in applying natural radiation to detect hidden voids and structural weaknesses in Victorian-era railway tunnels — replacing outdated and risky inspection methods with a safer, smarter solution.

As a proud member of the NETPark community, Geoptic exemplifies the kind of high-tech innovation and academic-commercial collaboration that defines our region. Their success is a testament to the strength of Durham University’s spin-out ecosystem and the impact of the Northern Accelerator programme, which helps translate world-class research into real-world solutions.

Congratulations to the Geoptic team — your success reflects the spirit of innovation that defines NETPark.
