UK semiconductor study highlights North East and NETPark strengths

A new UK semiconductor sector study has recognised the North East’s strengths in advanced electronics, semiconductor manufacturing and materials.
Commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, the study identifies 703 semiconductor companies operating across the UK, up from 623 in the previous analysis. Dedicated semiconductor businesses generated an estimated £10.6 billion in revenue and directly employed around 16,350 people in 2025.
The North East is highlighted as one of 12 recognised regional clusters and is described as a business-led advanced electronics cluster with expertise extending beyond conventional silicon into compound semiconductors, two-dimensional materials, polymer and organic materials, and hybrid technologies.
The report also recognises NETPark’s role within the national semiconductor ecosystem. It states that the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult’s NETPark site links the North East to South Wales’ national compound semiconductor infrastructure.
Regional strengths highlighted in the study include compound semiconductor radio frequency and millimetre-wave components, MEMS manufacturing, photonics for space and aerospace, and flexible, organic and radiation-detection electronics.
