The Medical Research Council (MRC) has opened applications for its Applicant-Led Research Grant, supporting ambitious research to drive important insights into the causes and mechanisms of disease, helping to accelerate diagnosis, advance treatment and prevent human illness.
Open to researchers employed by an eligible UK research organisation, the grant supports both single-team and collaborative projects. Funding is available for up to five years, with no upper funding limit, while MRC will fund 80% of full economic costs and 100% of eligible exceptions.
The opportunity opened on 7 April 2026 and has no closing date, with applications accepted on a rolling basis through the UKRI Funding Service. Shortlisting decision meetings take place twice a year, or more frequently depending on application numbers, with funding decision meetings held twice a year. Applicants are typically informed of outcomes within 10 working days of the funding decision meeting.
The flexible funding model offers researchers an opportunity to progress bold ideas and secure support for high-impact health research.
