The work, led by Kromek and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, marks the next milestone in developing new technology that could help save lives through earlier and more accurate detection of breast cancer.
Ground-breaking breast cancer imaging research developed in the North East has been showcased on the international stage, as the latest results from the project were presented at one of the world’s leading medical imaging conferences in Yokohama, Japan.
The project focuses on improving screening for women with dense breast tissue, which affects up to 40 per cent of women. It can make cancers harder to detect using standard mammography alone because both the tissue and cancers appear white on a mammogram, which means tumours can sometimes be hidden from view.
