Kromek reports growth across imaging and threat detection markets
NETPark-based Kromek has reported increased revenue and continued commercial progress across its advanced imaging and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) detection divisions.
The County Durham company, which develops radiation and biological threat-detection technology, generated revenue of £27.1 million in the year ending 30 April 2026, up from £26.5 million the previous year. Profit before tax reached £2.5 million, slightly ahead of expectations.
Growth in advanced medical imaging
Kromek’s Advanced Imaging division generated revenue of £19.9 million. Excluding exceptional and licensing income, underlying revenue increased by 76% to £6.7 million.
The company continued to deliver products through long-term customer contracts and reported further progress in photon-counting computed tomography. This technology uses Kromek’s cadmium zinc telluride detectors to produce more detailed medical images, supporting the diagnosis of conditions including cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
Work also progressed on an ultra-low-dose molecular breast imaging system being developed with Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Newcastle University and University College London. A prototype detector has been installed at a Newcastle hospital for evaluation.
Increased demand for CBRN detection technology
Revenue from Kromek’s CBRN Detection division increased by 17% to £7.3 million. During the year, Kromek received an initial £1.7 million order through the UK Government’s Radiological Nuclear Detection Framework. It also secured a £250,000 contract with the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory to develop new ways of detecting biological threats.
The company signed eight distribution agreements across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Investing in manufacturing and intellectual property
Kromek continued to expand and automate its production processes, helping to increase manufacturing capacity and efficiency. It also applied for three new patents and secured seven, taking its intellectual property portfolio to more than 190 patents.
Dr Arnab Basu, Chief Executive Officer of Kromek, described the year as one of “strong operational and commercial progress”. The company enters its new financial year with a healthy order book and expects further growth across both divisions.
