Radiation detection equipment created by Kromek Group plc in Sedgefield has been used to secure European dignitaries including Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, at the launch of the Festival of the New European Bauhaus 2024, at the Art and History Museum in Brussels.
The EU Commission Protective Security Advisor team utilised the Kromek equipment to secure the venue against radiological threats, as VIPs from across Europe gathered for the event, which was also attended by the Belgian prime minister, Alexander De Croo.
The New European Bauhaus is an interdisciplinary initiative launched by the European Commission, connecting the European Green Deal to daily lives and living spaces. It aims to create a sustainable and inclusive future that is also aesthetically pleasing.
The initiative emphasises the importance of combining design, sustainability, accessibility, affordability, and investment to help deliver the European Green Deal. It represents a significant effort to integrate environmental, economic, and cultural projects, aiming to inspire and demonstrate new ways of living where sustainability matches style, thus accelerating the green transition in various sectors.
Kromek’s portable radiological detector D3S was deployed at the festival’s launch on 9 April 2024.
The mobile phone-sized detector is used to search and identify radioactive doses in the environment and give feedback to the user instantaneously.
