About the event

Following the launch of Durham university’s £5 million Space Research Centre we welcome the key academics involved in the aim to drive innovation and sustainability in space exploration while strengthening the region’s growing space industry.


The Centre will be an internationally recognised hub of excellence in space research. It is founded on the principle of open, rigorous, and independent research to grow the capacity and capabilities of space applications while protecting the space environment for present and future generations.

Join us to hear from some of the key academics with expertise from the university’s physics, law, computer science, government and international affairs department, as well as Durham University Business School.

 

Dr. P.J. Blount, J.D., Ph.D., FHEA, Assistant Professor of Space Law.

His primary research areas are international space law with a focus on space security and cyberspace law and governance.


Dr Bleddyn Bowen, Associate Professor in Astropolitics and Space Warfare, School of Government and International Affairs (SGIA).

His research focuses on spacepower and strategic theory; space policy and politics; military space history; technology and modern warfare; international relations, security and intelligence in space.


Dr Andrew Reeves, Associate Professor in Physics.

Associate Professor research adaptive and active optics for space applications, including Free Space Optical Communications, Earth Observation and Space Situational Awareness

 

Dr Nikos Mavrakis, Assistant Professor in Computer Science.

Nikos Mavrakis is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Durham University. He holds a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from National Technical University of Athens (Greece, 2014), a M.Sc in Space Studies from KU Leuven (Belgium, 2015) and a Ph.D in Robotics from University of Birmingham.

 

Dr Nikita Chiu, Associate Professor, Durham University Business School, CHIU.

Dr Chiu is Associate Professor in Space Innovation and Technology Governance at Durham University. In 2019, she was named Ad Astra Distinguished Fellow in Robotic and Outer Space Governance by the Space Engineering Research Centre at USC.
