PragmatIC Semiconductor

CUTTING-edge electronics firm PragmatIC was founded in 2010 with a mission to create a new type of integrated circuit (IC) that was thin, flexible, and ultra-low cost. Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, with a new billion-unit production facility in County Durham, over the years the company has expanded significantly, taking lab and office space in the Explorer units at the region’s flagship science park NETPark, in Sedgefield.

“NETPark really is the ideal place for us,” said Ken Williamson, Chief Operating Officer at PragmatIC. He added, “Access to a highly skilled semiconductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.”

PragmatIC’s flexible integrated circuits (FlexICs) are thinner than a human hair and can be invisibly embedded in objects, enabling innovators to create novel solutions to everyday problems such as waste reduction that are not practical with conventional electronics. Designers can create their own application-specific flexible devices using the FlexIC Foundry™ service at a fraction of the cost and time required for traditional silicon circuits, opening up multiple new markets. PragmatIC also offers standard FlexIC products: the ConnectIC® family extends proven applications such as RFID and NFC into mass market use cases, introducing connectivity to everyday items including consumer goods and pharmaceuticals.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far – we have developed a completely new semiconductor technology platform and installed  a revolutionary, modular, scalable manufacturing line, with the potential to deliver billions of FlexICs at a fraction of the capital investment and operating cost of traditional silicon fabs,” said Scott White, Chief Executive Officer at PragmatIC.

Sarah Slaven, Interim Managing Director of Business Durham, which works on behalf of Durham County Council, said: “There are no limits to the use of PragmatIC’s innovative technology and their space in NETPark has allowed them to take their business to the next level with the support of its highly skilled team in the North East.”

The quality of the facilities at NETPark and the attitude of staff is first class. It has a really dynamic, innovative atmosphere.

Dr Neil Loxley, - Chief executive, IBEX

We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.

Ken Williamson, - COO, PragmatIC Printing

Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.

Steve Clements, - Managing Director, aXenic

CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.

Dr Jon Helliwell, - Director of Printable Electronics, CPI

The proximity to the universities and the infrastructure are very important factors. Ultimately having a presence in Europe is very valuable to us and we intend to stay at NETPark for many years to come.
