New Northern Powerhouse Partnership director visits Durham
THE director of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership has visited County Durham to find out how businesses, charities and the local authority are working together to help young people build a successful future.
Henri Murison met with Cllr Amanda Hopgood, the Leader of Durham County Council, in Peterlee on Friday to find out about DurhamWorks. This is a countywide programme led by the council that supports young people to gain the skills, qualifications and experiences they need to progress into jobs, training and education.
The pair also visited Magnitude Biosciences; a research organisation based in NETPark in Sedgefield, which provides the kind of high skilled jobs essential for Levelling Up the region.
Both DurhamWorks and Magnitude Biosciences have benefited from European Union (EU) funding and Mr Murison and Cllr Hopgood are calling on the government to ensure County Durham and the rest of the north receive a fair settlement from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
This will replace funding due to cease following the UK’s exit from the EU, but analysis from the Northern Powerhouse Partnership indicates the north east could be almost £35 million worse off.

We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.
The quality of the facilities at NETPark and the attitude of staff is first class. It has a really dynamic, innovative atmosphere.
It fits perfectly for us that we’re surrounded by like-minded companies at NETPark. There are a number of highly skilled people in the area who can help us grow our business. The facilities and services offered by NETPark are first class, they make office life simple and engaging.
Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.
CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.
