Durham in world’s top 100 universities
Durham University has again been ranked as a World Top 100 university.
The QS World University Rankings 2021 place Durham 86th globally out of more than 1,000 higher education institutions, and 12th in the UK.
We are proud to be ranked in the Top 100 of this prestigious international league table. This achievement is testament to the amazing talent and dedication of our staff and students.
Employer reputation
More than 52,000 of the world’s leading employers have also ranked us 51st globally for the quality of our outstanding graduates in these latest rankings.
We pride ourselves on producing world-leading and world-changing research with an education that challenges our students, in addition to a varied wider student experience through sport, music, drama and volunteering.
We have one of the most active student volunteering communities of any UK university and our Student Volunteering and Outreach (DUSVO) has recently been honoured with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given for community volunteering in the UK.
Life changing research
Our researchers are working on projects across the world with many addressing key global challenges. For example, a specialist team of researchers is currently trying to find out if specially-trained bio-detection dogs can sniff out Covid-19 in humans. The team, also involving London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Medical Detection Dogs, has previously shown that dogs can be trained to detect malaria in children.
Internationally recognised
The QS World University Rankings 2021 is just the latest league table success we are celebrating.
We have 17 of subjects ranked in the World Top 100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, including 9 in the World Top 50.
Three subjects are in the top 10 – Archaeology (forth); Theology and Religion (fourth); Geography (tenth).
Nationally, we’re consistently a UK Top Ten university and we’re ranked fifth in the Guardian University Guide, seventh in The Complete University Guide and seventh in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

It fits perfectly for us that we’re surrounded by like-minded companies at NETPark. There are a number of highly skilled people in the area who can help us grow our business. The facilities and services offered by NETPark are first class, they make office life simple and engaging.
The quality of the facilities at NETPark and the attitude of staff is first class. It has a really dynamic, innovative atmosphere.
Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.
The proximity to the universities and the infrastructure are very important factors. Ultimately having a presence in Europe is very valuable to us and we intend to stay at NETPark for many years to come.
CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.
We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.
