Axenic Wins Significant Contract with Leonardo
NETPark, Sedgefield, County Durham, United Kingdom. aXenic today announced that it had been awarded a contract by the UK arm of the aerospace, defence and security company Leonardo for the supply of custom optical modulator devices over the next two years. This is based on its world leading optical technology based in gallium arsenide semiconductor. Its technology has provided best in class high speed modulators and robust devices for harsh conditions such as space and aerospace applications as well as record modulation results in telecommunication applications.
Steve Clements, CEO of aXenic said “We are really excited about this design win in the aerospace, defence and security market, adding to our growing business in satellite communications and Test and Measurement, where our customers have seen the benefits of our competitive offerings in small size and developing business in highest speed and high bandwidth modulator products.”
aXenic’s products and expertise covers semiconductor modulator design, optical and high speed test and optical packaging. The experience and capabilities of the business go back over 20 years with background in product offerings in both telecom and analogue markets. It uses a subcontract route to product build and its product platform is supported by its established and developing patent portfolio.
Leonardo is one of the top international aerospace, defence and security companies. The company has a significant industrial presence in Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland and the USA. Listed on the Milan Stock Exchange (LDO), in 2020 Leonardo recorded consolidated revenues of €13.4 billion and invested €1.6 billion in Research and Development. The company has been part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) since 2010 and has been named as sustainability global leader in the Aerospace & Defence sector for the second year in a row of DJSI in 2020.

We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.
Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.
The proximity to the universities and the infrastructure are very important factors. Ultimately having a presence in Europe is very valuable to us and we intend to stay at NETPark for many years to come.
CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.
