North East Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence
The North East Satellite Applications Centre of Excellence is one of five regional centres of excellence across the UK, operating with support from the UK Space Agency and the Satellite Applications Catapult based in Harwell. The Satellite Applications Catapult is part of the UK’s network of technology and innovation companies, set up by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), to drive economic growth in key sectors.
We provide SME’s and large companies in the North East with the opportunity to tap into the UK’s multibillion-pound space sector through direct access to a programme of:
- Industry and technical events
- World class academic expertise
- Business development tools and support
These services are designed to help North East companies exploit new opportunities in a sector that has grown by an average of 7% since 2008.
The North East Satellite Applications Catapult Centre of Excellence engages with all businesses including those operating within key North East industries which can use satellite applications (technology and data) to gain a competitive advantage in a global market:
- Offshore oil, gas and renewable technologies
- Transport and logistics
- Software and applications development
The North East Satellite Applications Catapult Centre of Excellence is supported by a regional consortium of Business Durham, Tees Valley Unlimited, The North East Local Enterprise Partnership, the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside and the Business and Enterprise Group.

CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.
Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.
We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.
The quality of the facilities at NETPark and the attitude of staff is first class. It has a really dynamic, innovative atmosphere.
