About the event

Our monthly chance for the North East space community and also those from outside the region to find out the latest news, hear interesting experiences from our speakers and network with each other.

This month, our talks are focused on opportunities literally in space! The launch of NASA’s Artemis programme which aims to put astronauts on the moon (and staying there) in 2024 is already setting the tone for future investments in the lunar economy. Also space based solar energy, effectively a power station in space, is already on its way to make it a reality.

Dr Michael Maughan, Mac SciTech

MAC SciTech, based at NETPark, are currently focusing on next-generation Space Life-Support technology and are looking to revolutionise long-duration energy storage on Earth.

Having recently been awarded funding from the UK Space Agency, they are taking the lead on a project which will optimise the design and function of the various components of reactor systems designed to recycle breathing gases in off-planet environments such as low Earth orbit, lunar or on Mars.

Michael will be joining us to discuss their progress in off-planet life support technologies as well as opportunities in space biotech, medtech and agritech.

William Birch, Beyond Earth Missions Lead, Satellite Applications Catapult

William will be telling us about the use of satellites and other space-based systems that will deliver activities and missions involving beyond our planet. These systems play a critical role in enabling exploration and discovery as well as providing important services and capabilities here on earth. Some of the areas of interest include:

• Active Debris Removal

• In-Orbit Servicing and manufacturing

• In-Situ Space Resource Utilisation (ISRU)

• Launch and Propulsion

• Microgravity

• Space-based energy

• Space Domain Awareness
