GC Norway established to support expansion in Scandinavia and the EU

GC Norway established to support expansion in Scandinavia and the EU

GC announces its launch of a Norwegian subsidiary located in Steinkjer’s innovation campus, InnoCamp.

GC’s focus in Norway will be to strengthen partnerships and further develop and commercialise our patented and patent pending solutions in health, ballistic protection, energy, and composites.  The aim is to grow the company, to become a valuable partner in the Norwegian market, and meet the region’s future needs and those of the rest of Europe.

Steinkjer is in Trøndelag, a region renowned for being a knowledge and innovation hub; its excellent research facilities and funding initiatives, particularly in the fields of science, energy, and health, are a major draw for many international organisations.

GC Norway will primarily concentrate on the commercialisation of GC Ink™, a patent pending graphene oxide and silver nanoparticle formulation with a proven ability to kill viruses and bacteria. The ink establishes a virucidal layer on fabrics and has been independently tested and ISO certified to have at least 99% virucidal efficacy when applied as a coating to filter materials. Fast-acting, effective, and safe, GC Ink successfully traps and kills airborne coronaviruses and other pathogens, including influenza.

GC is already collaborating with some Norwegian organisations and is using Norwegian-produced graphene of the highest quality. GC is pleased to have established a partnership with SINTEF. The competence SINTEF brings, and pioneering research institute, offering world-leading laboratory and test facilities, will be valuable in supporting the development and commercialisation of GC Ink.

“We were attracted to Norway’s stable society and strong economy, its high level of education, and the significant technology and research innovation capabilities available in the country,” said Sandy Chen, GC CEO & Co-Founder.“As demand for GC Ink rises, GC Norway is well-positioned to scale production to meet demand across Norway, and the rest of Europe. Working with partners builds on this strategy, strengthening our supply chain and key collaborative relationships in the region. We are excited about this development and are keen to hear from other organisations interested in joining with us to explore new opportunities for nanomaterials to help solve key technical challenges.”

Senior Scientist at SINTEF, Dr. Branson Belle, said, “We are very excited to see GC establish a subsidiary here in Norway. With our advanced characterisation laboratories and competence, SINTEF is well-positioned to support GC in its further development”.

Kyrre Haugen, General Manager at the Norwegian British Chamber of Commerce says “It is exciting to see GC establish a footing in Norway with opportunities to leverage its unique nanotechnology with the excellent research & development facilities and services that Norway can provide – ultimately strengthening the trade and investment between Norway and the UK. We look forward to supporting their growth and anticipate great things for the future”.

Durham researchers named among world’s best

Durham researchers named among world’s best

The research quality and influence of three Durham University professors from the Institute for Computational Cosmology has seen them named among the very best in the world.

Cosmologists Carlos Frenk, Adrian Jenkins and Tom Theuns were recognised in the Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers 2021 list.

Professors Frenk, Jenkins and Theuns’ listing puts Durham joint first in the UK and joint second in Europe for the strength of our research in Space Science.

The Clarivate list identifies scientists and social scientists who have published multiple research papers that rank in the top one per cent in their field in the Web of Science citation index.

This demonstrates the significant influence that Durham research has among fellow academics worldwide who have referenced the University’s findings in their own studies.

Professor Frenk, Ogden Professor of Fundamental Physics and founder and former Director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology (ICC), is one of the original proponents of the theory of cold dark matter which has now become the standard model of cosmology. He is one of world’s foremost researchers in this field.

This year, he was awarded the Rumford Prize for Physics from the Royal Society. Last year he was awarded the Paul Dirac Medal and Prize by the Institute of Physics, as well as being named “Nobel Class” by Clarivate for his fundamental studies of galaxy formation and evolution, cosmic structure, and dark matter halos.

Professor Jenkins is a leading expert on cosmological simulations and the nature of dark matter, and has pioneered techniques that are now in widespread use across the world.

Professor Theuns is a foremost expert on cosmological simulations of the formation of galaxies and has carried out ground-breaking investigations of the evolution of gas – the raw material of stars in the universe. Both Prof Jenkins and Theuns are also members of the ICC.

Professor Colin Bain, Vice-Provost (Research), at Durham University, said: “At Durham University, we strive to produce research that is among the very best in the world. The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list shows how highly our research is regarded by fellow researchers globally.

“To be among the top one per cent of researchers on the planet is a fantastic feat and I congratulate Carlos, Adrian and Tom for the extremely high quality of their research work which has underpinned this outstanding achievement.”

In total, 6,602 researchers from more than 70 countries and regions have been recognised by Clarivate this year. Analysis was performed by experts at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information.

Since 2015, Durham University has seen at least six papers in the top 0.1 per cent of the most cited papers in astronomy, which is out of nearly 460,000 papers.

David Pendlebury, Senior Citation Analyst at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate said: “It is increasingly important for nations and institutions to recognize and support the exceptional researchers who are driving the expansion of the world’s knowledge.

“This list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Durham University who are having a significant impact on the research community as evidenced by the rate at which their work is being cited by their peers. The research they have contributed is fuelling the innovation, sustainability, health and security that is key for our society’s future.”

Access to quality facilities was one of the main drivers for deciding to locate the business at the NETPark. We have been able to use this as a launch pad to link into support from CPI and world-class expertise from Durham University.

Steve Clements, - Managing Director, aXenic

CPI has developed a specialist offering to support SMEs looking to develop their printable electronics applications and our partnership with Business Durham has been instrumental in attracting several SMEs to locate here in the region.

Dr Jon Helliwell, - Director of Printable Electronics, CPI

We initially came because of the printable electronics centre but access to a highly skilled semi conductor workforce in the North East has been a key factor in us staying and growing here, as well as the value for money office space and the access to funding.

Ken Williamson, - COO, PragmatIC Printing

The quality of the facilities at NETPark and the attitude of staff is first class. It has a really dynamic, innovative atmosphere.

Dr Neil Loxley, - Chief executive, IBEX

The proximity to the universities and the infrastructure are very important factors. Ultimately having a presence in Europe is very valuable to us and we intend to stay at NETPark for many years to come.

Dr Arnab Basu, - CEO, Kromek

It fits perfectly for us that we’re surrounded by like-minded companies at NETPark. There are a number of highly skilled people in the area who can help us grow our business. The facilities and services offered by NETPark are first class, they make office life simple and engaging.
