North East England has 4 Centres of Excellence dedicate to the commercialisation of technology:

The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is directed to prove excellence in new processes, new products and new energy. It works closely with industry, from multinationals to high-tech start-ups, investors, government agencies and leading researchers to stimulate and manage market-led innovation.


Cels builds on the key research and technology strengths found in the region's universities, in the NHS and in industry in the fields of Cancer and Ageing, Human Genetics, Informatics, Clinical Medicine and Devices, Stem Cell Therapies and Plant Biotechnology.

Codeworks focuses on the exploitation of nascent digital technologies and media. It applies these emerging technologies to a number of important applications, most notably GRID computing, reliable computing, visual computing and broadband content and applications.

New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) is achieving new breakthroughs in the design, deployment and commercialisation of sustainable energy technologies.
