HMS Bulwark

HMS Bulwark is affiliated to County Durham and visited the county in May 2013 to strengthen the existing ties. During this time the ship's company visited NETPark and were shown round the facilities there. This also gave members of Durham County Council and Business Durham the opportunity to travel onboard HMS Bulwark and witness a demonstration of the ship's capabilities. Following the visit to County Durham the ship has been made an ambassador of the North East Technology Park.

HMS Bulwark is the Flagship of the Royal Navy and the nation. Summer 2012 saw her as one of the 'guardians of the Games', stationed of Weymouth ensuring the Olympic sailing events were safe for all.

Along with sister ship HMS Albion, her role is to deliver the punch of the Royal Marines ashore by air and by sea, with boats from the landing dock in the belly of the ship and by assault helicopter from the two-spot flight deck.

She can carry 265 troops, with their vehicles and combat supplies, and this can be swollen up to 405 troops.

The vehicle deck can be crammed with 31 large trucks and 36 smaller vehicles such as Land Rovers and Vikings, and can carry armoured vehicles such as the Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank.

Bulwark was launched at Barrow-in-Furness in November 2001, and commisioned into the Fleet in April 2005.

2015 saw much action for HMS Bulwark, and in particular 'Operation WEALD' which saw the HMS Bulwark team saving the lives of over 5000 refugees at sea - men, women and children who surely would have perished without their help.

This professionalism and excellence was recently publicly recognised at the Sun newspaper's annual Military Awards - The Millies, where HMS Bulwark was awarded the 'Best Unit In Defence' award. This was the first time a warship had ever won the prize, and allowed members of the Ship's company to attend a reception at 10 Downing Street and be presented the award at the Guildhall.

Closer to home, HMS Bulwark also received the 'Fleet Effectiveness Award' (the highest honour the Royal Navy can give to a warship) for the totality of what they achieved in 2015.
